One spring morning in 1838, the inventor Louis Daguerre stands at the window of his studio and points his camera at the view before him.
It is rush hour on the Boulevard du Temple. But with an exposure time of several minutes, the bustle of Paris cannot be captured.
When the image appears on the silvered plate, Daguerre discovers an unexpected detail: a shoeshiner and his customer who, by chance, have remained still long enough to appear in the photograph.
These two strangers are believed to be the first human beings ever to appear in a photograph.
The project sets out to identify and mark the exact spot where they stood that morning.
